Shrimp Scampi Recipe

Shrimp Scampi Recipe

The origins of Shrimp Scampi can be traced back to Italian cuisine. The term "scampi" actually refers to a type of small lobster-like crustacean found in the Mediterranean Sea. However, in the United States, the term "scampi" is often used to describe a dish made with shrimp cooked in a garlic and butter sauce.
The exact origins of Shrimp Scampi are a bit unclear, as the dish has evolved over time. It is believed to have its roots in Italian-American cuisine, which developed in the early 20th century when Italian immigrants brought their traditional recipes to the United States and adapted them using local ingredients.
The dish typically consists of large shrimp sautéed in butter or olive oil along with garlic, white wine, and lemon juice. Sometimes, additional ingredients like parsley, red pepper flakes, and Parmesan cheese are added for extra flavor. The shrimp is cooked until it becomes tender and flavorful, and the sauce is reduced to a rich and aromatic consistency.
Shrimp Scampi gained popularity in the United States during the mid-20th century and has since become a classic seafood dish enjoyed in many Italian-American restaurants. Today, variations of Shrimp Scampi can be found in various cuisines around the world, but its Italian-American roots remain a significant part of its history.

Classic Shrimp Scampi Recipe

Ingredients:

1 pound (450g) large shrimp, peeled and deveined
4 tablespoons butter
4 tablespoons olive oil
4 cloves garlic, minced
1/2 cup white wine
Juice of 1 lemon
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Salt and pepper to taste
2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley
Cooked pasta or crusty bread for serving

Instructions:

1. In a large skillet, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
2. Add the minced garlic to the skillet and sauté for about 1 minute until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
3. Add the shrimp to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes, stirring occasionally until they start to turn pink. Do not overcook the shrimp as they will continue cooking in the sauce.
4. Remove the shrimp from the skillet and set them aside.
5. Increase the heat to medium-high and add the white wine to the skillet. Allow it to simmer for 2-3 minutes, allowing the alcohol to cook off.
6. Add the lemon juice, red pepper flakes (if desired), salt, and pepper to the skillet. Stir well to combine.
7. Return the shrimp to the skillet and toss them in the sauce, cooking for an additional 1-2 minutes until they are fully cooked and coated in the sauce.
8. Remove the skillet from the heat and sprinkle the chopped parsley over the shrimp scampi. Stir to incorporate.
9. Serve the shrimp scampi over cooked pasta or with crusty bread on the side.
